Yes I have retired from sewing. Although I will probably post a few specialty items from time to time so I'm not deleting this blog yet. But I am giving myself a good long break to see if my hands will feel better without sewing for 5-6 hours a day! And yes, they do! I did see a new orthopedist and hand specialist last week who encouraged me to get the carpal tunnel release surgery on my left hand to prevent further and permanent damage to it....first I will get another EMG study to see how the nerves are working. Ever have one of those? Tons of fun....NOT! It feels like getting electrocuted...because you are getting electrocuted!

Although I have sold and donated quite a bit of my surplus fabric (the local branch of the Linus Project in Lancaster just got about 10 bolts!), I have kept my favorites and my embroidery machine...I will continue to do Chinese character tees and a few other specialty items. So check back from time to time!

In the meantime, do visit my photography website and blog--I launched Fly Away Home Photography about a year ago and am loving it! I'm going to be doing a big giveaway over on that blog this month with some fun prizes--jewelry, handbag, framed photos...so take a look and become a follower.

Seven years is a long time to singlehandedly make thousands of dresses. With only two very short breaks after adopting each of my girls, I even kept sewing even through surgery for carpal tunnel. Yes, it is difficult to use scissors with a large bandage and stitches on one's right hand!

I want to thank my regular customers who have been with me since the beginning, back in 2005 when we were waiting for our daughters. April Pandas, you know who you are! And I want to thank the newer customers, who discovered me in the last two years. Many of you have become friends and I am glad to have met you, even in the virtual world. I launched this business Easter weekend of 2005 with two dresses--then I lost count of China Kids dresses after I made 300 of them.

I plan on discontinuing custom clothing effective at the end of 2011. Frankly, I am tired...tired of working with the same fabrics, tired of spending hours in my basement without seeing the light of day, tired of sewing at 1 am, tired of my hands hurting all the time, tired of people who'd rather spend more money on Matilda Jane and other outsourced "boutiques" that actually have stuff made overseas. So the time has come. My photography business, Fly Away Home Photography (www.flyawayhomephotography.com), which I launched in 2010 is growing and my heart lies more behind the camera than at the sewing machine right now. There is only so much time in the day, and the girls are still young.

I may continue to embroider tees or offer set outfits for sale--that is to be determined. In the meantime, I will be posting some one-of-a-kind items on my Facebook page. I am taking orders for the Dragon tee for Chinese New Year and I may continue to post the "Stash Busters" as I do have quite a lot of fabric to use up.

There are a lot of at-home seamstresses like me with online boutiques. We hand make every outfit. We have no staff, no employees. We are seamstress, purchaser, marketing planner, IT person, web designer, and photographer. We work late into the night and early into the morning. We measure and pin and create one of a kind outfits, and custom creations. Our kids are our models. We sew in the USA. We sell on blogs, Facebook, Etsy and Ebay. But we make everything ourselves. Please support us.

There are many "boutiques" out there who don't offer this custom service. They may offer "trunk shows" and "home parties" but the sewing is outsourced to China, Peru, India and other places outside of the USA. I post this to encourage readers to support the true at-home boutiques, the women like me who have a dream to create beautiful one-of-a-kind outfits for girls, women who are trying to raise money for adoptions, who are trying to help support a family without getting a job outside the home, who just love to sew. The prize will include: a Raku Chinese charm pendant by Miya Pottery

Raku, with its roots in Japanese tradition, is a firing technique that produces never-to-be-repeated bursts of iridescent color and crackle patterns on its glazed surfaces. It is quick, hands-on, and spontaneous. The rhythm I create when doing raku firings is like a dance and the results are dependent on my every move. Most of my stoneware and raku pieces are made on the potter’s wheel. I often decorate my pieces with kanji, or Chinese characters, using a traditional Japanese calligraphy brush which allows me to express myself through a beautiful written language that is part of my own culture.

Prize #2 comes from me--a Good Fortune tee. Black tee shirt embroidered with the Chinese character for Good fortune in either red or gold (color of tee may vary with size desired)

When i saw this fabric, I loved the reds and blues together and thought it would make a beautiful dress for Chinese New Year, and be something a little different.

This dress is a loose wrap style with a separate obi sash that wraps around and ties in front with ribbon. The bodice is fully lined. Neckline, sleeves and hem are finished in contrasting trim. We can raise funds for the next three months--until Natalie's Gotcha Day anniversary--through Just Love Coffee. Every bag you purchase through our coffee store helps with the remaining expenses from Natalie's adoption. I know there are a lot of causes out there. And a lot of people adopting are giving away awesome prizes through raffles and have huge donations. Well, we aren't one of those people. Fly Away Home Clothing has helped with both adoptions but we still have many thousands yet to pay off from our adoption trip bring Natalie home.

Here's my latest creation: I found this cute little ladybug print at my local fabric store--there are ladybugs and butterflies, vines and flowers. I added two pockets to the dress in a coordinating stripe and accented them with pink rickrack. A wide stripe band finishes the hem, also accented with rickrack.

I came upon some new applique patterns for an Asian girl...I actually have six different versions in the set. And I thought this would be a cute addition to this new dress. This dress was a special order, and it wasn't Olivia's size, so I couldn't get her to model for me.

The skirt is new fabric from Timeless Treasures. When I decided to applique the girl on this dress, I realized I had some blossom fabric that was almost an exact match for the dolls. I think the dress came out pretty cute, what do you think? And yes, I can recreate this dress if anyone would like to order it!

Her family is raising funds to go to China this fall and adopt a 9 year old boy. Chris and her husband have five children already...the youngest two girls are adopted from China. She is also an amazing quilter. Since I have no patience for quilting, I can really appreciate and respect someone who can do it!

Each bag is unique! And very well made (I own one myself). Each is lined with cotton fabric and has pockets for phones and stuff.

Two New Fabrics!

Here are two new fabrics I have in stock! I found the blue with the ladybugs at my local quilting fabric store, Zook's. I live in the "Amishland" of Lancaster County, PA and have a few good fabric stores. Although, they used to be better when they were Amish stores. I remember shopping at Zook's 18 years ago when they were still an Amish store and the place was lit by gas lanterns. You shopped under the hiss of the lanterns. I had to remember not to go there on a rainy day, because you couldn't really see the fabrics well under the gas lights. There were these great old time cash registers that the Amish ladies cranked. Prices were fantastic back then, in the early 90--high quality quilt fabric was $5 a yard. Now, Zook's is lit by modern electricity and even as a website. And the prices have increased. But they have a big inventory and prices are cheaper than what I see online. The workers also know me as the "ladybug fabric lady" and point out any new ladybug fabric they have each time I visit the store. I hadn't been there since before we adopted Natalie, but the kids and I stopped in last week and all the fabric ladies were quite interested that now I had TWO Chinese girls with me.Natalie was of course toddling around in squeaky shoes and Olivia was trying to be the bossy big sister. I definitely liked this new Timeless Treasures blue ladybug fabric and bought a couple of yards to try something out and see if you guys like it!

Ruffle Front Sundress

I found this design online and decided to experiment with the ruffle front sundress pattern with some fabric I have in my stash. I added a section of five layers of ruffles to the front of this lined jumper to create a fun bright dress for summer. I may work up something in a ladybug print for this design.

Several generous people have graciously helped us through our adoption journey. A smocked dress

No I didn't get Natalie's dress finished. She wore a smocked dress that my mother made for Susannah's first birthday. It has a beautiful smocked bonnet to match, but it looked too babyish for a 21 month old so I left that off. I hope you can appreciate the detail of the smocking on this dress. My mother always did the Bishop pattern, but I had picked out this design for a dress for Susannah to wear to a wedding when she was an infant, and my mother liked it and made a few of them. My mom was the real seamstress of the family and every baby girl born in the extended family received a hand smocked dress.

And you must know, that anything I make or have made truly pales in comparison to what my mom could sew and smock. She didn't own a serger, and even sewed all her hems and zippers by hand.

This one is Olivia's Easter dress. The question is: will I finish Natalie's by Saturday night? I still have 2 days, right? It's mostly done except the hem and buttons--her's is the same fabric, but different style. But I am considering having her wear one of my mother's smocked dresses instead. There is a particular dress that Susannah and Olivia have worn for Easter. I'll have to try it on Natalie today and decide!

I found a new ladybug fabric by Kaufman--it's a nice batik, with lovely mottled shades of green, and hot pink ladybugs. Paired with a hot pink rib knit tank, it makes a great summer dress.

Ladybug Bracelet Set

I was hoping to get more interest in my drawing for the Mother-Daughter Ladybug Bracelet set. It was so kind of Jeanne of Charmed Bracelets to donate this set and I had hoped to raise quite a bit more funds than what we have so far. The bracelets are worth $150 and are handmade, and one of a kind. I have extended the drawing until March 30th. I may have to return them to the donor if I can't raise at least what they are worth. We are raising funds to help pay the remainder of Natalie's adoption expenses. In addition, she will be getting surgery for her hand most likely in the fall.

blankets

I am NOT a quilter. I have no clue about quilts and no patience for them. But what I do have is lots of fabric. I decided to make a couple of blankets for Project Linus so I attempted some machine quilting. (Chris, don't look too closely!)

The panda quilt is shown in progress... I had some flannel scraps around and a big piece of safari animal flannel for a backing. So I cut squares, piece them together and machine quilted the blocks.

I thought this map panel was pretty fun. I bought a couple of these, and another one of the entire world. I'm going to do wallhangings to hang in the girls' playroom. But the first one became a blanket. I machine quilted around each state and around the outline of the US. And now it is an educational blanket--each state is pictured with its capitol and with a picture of something from that state.

No these are not for sale and I don't think quilting is going to be my thing. These will be given to local children in the hospital.
